Gov. Jan Brewer would prefer for you to be Straight if you want to Adopt Children

Lord, just when I give this heifer a compliment, she turns around and kicks dirt on my Prada loafers. Jan has approved a bill that gives married couples preference over others for adopting kids.


Senate Bill 1188, which was sponsored by Sen. Linda Gray, R-Glendale, would require an adoption agency to give primary consideration to adoptive placement with a married man and woman, with all other criteria being equal.
The bill applies to both state and private adoption agencies. Previously, only Utah has a law requiring priority for married couples, though several other states have bans on adoptions by same-sex couples or by unmarried couples.
Conservative groups and other supporters of the measure said children should have every opportunity to grow up in a household with a mom and dad. But critics said the bill will discourage singles from considering adoption in Arizona. About one-third of the foster children in Arizona are adopted by an unmarried person.

So technically, it's not saying gays can't adopt, but it sure is hard as Hell for a gay couple to do so. Way to go, Jan.

Gov. Jan Brewer Vetoes Birther Bill and Guns on Campus

Well, I guess Jan has some sense. She decided to veto the stupid guns on campus bill and the ultra stupid Birther bill.  Here's more on the topic, including what the 2 bills would have allowed:


Guns on Campus Bill: SB 1467
- Would've allowed guns to be carried on public rights of way at public university and community college campuses
- Applies only to rights of way -- not inside classrooms
- University presidents opposed the bill
"This bill was very sloppily written and drafted, and I believe when it affects not only our education system, all the way from K-12 through the university, and we can't even find out a definition of what is a right of way... how are we going to enforce a law like that?" Governor Brewer told us.

'Birther' Bill: HB 2177
- Would've required President Barack Obama and other presidential candidates to prove they are U.S. citizens before their names can appear on the state's ballot
- Arizona would've become the first state to require such proof
- 13 other states have considered similar proposals this year. The proposals were defeated in Arkansas, Connecticut, Maine and Montana
As for her decision to veto this bill, Gov. Brewer said in part: "I never imagined being presented with a bill that could require candidates for President of the greatest and most powerful nation on earth to submit their 'early baptismal or circumcision certificates'… this is a bridge too far. This measure creates significant new problems while failing to do anything constructive for Arizona."
 I can't believe I'm saying this, but good job Jan.

Arizona's Wicked Governor, Jan Brewer will appeal the Block on SB 1070

This spotted dog doesn't know when to quit! Jan wants to appeal the block on the racist immigration law.
Arizona Governor Jan Brewer said Wednesday she would swiftly appeal a judge's ruling blocking key parts of a new state immigration law, vowing to take it all the way to the Supreme Court.
"This fight is far from over. In fact, it is just the beginning, and at the end of what is certain to be a long legal struggle, Arizona will prevail in its right to protect our citizens," Brewer said in a statement.
She said the state would soon file an expedited appeal after District Judge Susan Bolton blocked parts of the law which would have given police the power to check the immigration status of all suspects.
Bolton also suspended parts of the law, which goes into effect on Thursday, requiring everyone to carry proof of their residency status and making it a crime for illegal immigrants to seek work.
Jan, give it up.

Judge Blocks a Key Parts of Arizona's SB 1070 law

Judge Susan Bolton just blocked the key pieces of Arizona broke ass immigration law.

NY Times reports:

In a ruling on a law that has rocked politics coast to coast and thrown a spotlight on the border state’s fierce debate over immigration, United States District Court Judge Susan Bolton in Phoenix said some aspects of the law can go into effect as scheduled on Thursday.
But Judge Bolton took aim at the parts of the law that have generated the most controversy, issuing a preliminary injunction against sections that called for officers to check a person’s immigration status while enforcing other laws and that required immigrants to carry their papers at all times.
Judge Bolton put those sections on hold while she continues to hear the larger issues in the challenges to the law.
“Preserving the status quo through a preliminary injunction is less harmful than allowing state laws that are likely preempted by federal law to be enforced,” she said.
“There is a substantial likelihood that officers will wrongfully arrest legal resident aliens,” she wrote. “By enforcing this statute, Arizona would impose a ‘distinct, unusual and extraordinary’ burden on legal resident aliens that only the federal government has the authority to impose.”
The judge’s decision, which came as demonstrators opposed and supporting the law gathered here and after three hearings in the past two weeks in which she peppered lawyers on both sides with skeptical questions, seemed unlikely to quell the debate.

DOJ Challenges Arizona

Here we go. The DOJ is taking Arizona to court over SB107:
The Obama administration sued Arizona on Tuesday to throw out the state's toughest-in-the-nation immigration law and keep other states from copying it.
The lawsuit filed in federal court in Phoenix said the law, due to take effect July 29, usurps the federal government's "pre-eminent authority" under the Constitution to regulate immigration.
The move sets the stage for a high-stakes legal clash over states' rights at a time when politicians in some other states have indicated they want to follow Arizona's lead.
The legal action represents a stern denunciation of the law, which the Justice Department declared will "cause the detention and harassment of authorized visitors, immigrants and citizens who do not have or carry identification documents" while ignoring "humanitarian concerns" and harming diplomatic relations.
There are protest and rallies to come. I wonder how this will turn out.
