"Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt are excellent in the central roles.
(500) Days of Summer (Expectations vs. Reality)
Sometimes these tangential departures pay off - such as a segment in which a split-screen reveals Tom's expectations against his reality - but at other times - such as an ill-advised black and white French film homage - it feels as though Webb is serving his own whims rather than adding something to the story for his audience.
Flawed though it is, 500 Days Of Summer is still a fair cut above the average piece of Hollywood fare both in terms of its laugh quotient and offbeat romance".

"(500) Days of Summer" stars hipster axiom Joseph Gordon-Levitt as an aspiring architect who falls for a romantically challenged co-worker, played by Zooey Deschanel. As our friends over at Curbed LA note, the film was initially set in San Francisco, but the location was changed after Gordon-Levitt and director Marc Webb took a walking tour of downtown L.A. The script was then rewritten to incorporate the buildings they saw -- including the Bradbury Building (most famous for "Blade Runner"); the Music Center (which includes the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion); and the towers of California Plaza".
ZOOEY DESCHANEL TRACKS DOWN MIDCENTURY CLASSICS IN L.A.:
Architectural Digest: Shopping with Zooey Deschanel.
HC: Rian Johnson and you created a substantial mind blast with 2005’s ‘Brick’. Do you anticipate working with him again, are there any projects floating about?Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Nathan Johnson, Rian Johnson and Jared Gellar (The Cinematic Underground).
JG-L: I would hope so. Rian and I are really close and I think he’s going to be making movies for the rest of his life and hopefully I’m doing the same so there is bound to be an intersection at some point.
HC: Your first mainstream summer action movie is about to be released. What is the atmosphere on that type of movie set as opposed to your usual more sedate independent drama?
JG-L: The G.I. Joe set was nothing but fun. It was like getting together with your buddies when you were a kid and playing with toys. Even with all the special effects work, all it is was a fun bunch of toys". Architectural Digest: Shopping with Zooey Deschanel.
"The daughter of cinematographer Caleb Deschanel and actress Mary Jo Deschanel, she thrives on such allowances.
Deschanel grew up in a Craftsman-influenced house in L.A.’s Pacific Palisades and currently lives in a traditional house in Beverly Hills, but she surrounds herself with postwar treasures—an Eero Saarinen Tulip table, a Danish modern love seat and chairs, a vanity and dresser from the 1940s. At the moment she could use a larger dining table—but for Deschanel shopping is less a mission than an adventure. “That’s why I like flea markets. I’ll be looking for one thing and then find something else, like an old record player or typewriter or globe.”

"Downtown L.A. just seemed like a perfect fit in a way. So few people pay it any attention, and there's a ton of history and stuff that's pretty beautiful and fascinating," co-writer Scott Neustadter told Curbed LA.
"We were very conscious not to do the 'Entourage' L.A. but to show it in a way other movies and TV shows rarely do."
In perhaps an ironic nod, there's also a scene of the stars taking a romp through IKEA. From the architecturally sublime to the big-box generic". Source: latimesblogs.latimes.com
